Volvo is planning to open its first plant in the United States in South Carolina.

volvo-south-carolinaThe new Volvo plant will be built in Berkeley County, S.C., with construction starting later this year. This new facility will be able to churn out 100,000 cars a year and will add 2,00 jobs to the area. The factory will be up and running in 2018, reports Detroit Free Press.

Volvo’s new plant in S.C. will cost $500 million to create. The company was looking to build it in either South Carolina or Georgia. It chose S.C. because of its proximity to international ports, well-trained workers, its experience with high tech manufacturing and other reasons, Detroit Free Press notes.

If all goes well with Volvo sales, the company may expand its vehicle production and workforce. This could lead to the plant employing 4,000 workers and producing roughly 200,000 vehicles a year, reports Reuters.
