Monsanto (NYSE:MON) may be in hot waters again over a popular weedkiller that may contain a dangerous ingredient.

MonsantoThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating Roundup, the most popular weedkiller out there. The product contains the active ingredient glyphosate, which the World Health Organization (WHO) said can cause cancer.

Monsanto is facing a number of legal battles involving farmers who claim their exposure to the product caused them cancer. The company denies that glyphosate is a carcinogen.

“The most extensive worldwide human health databases ever compiled on an agricultural product contradict the claims in the suits,” Monsanto spokeswoman Charla Lord told Reuters.

Some European countries — such as Denmark, Sweden, France and the Netherlands — have imposed restrictions designed to limit humans’ direct contact with Roundup.

The FDA will begin testing for glyphosate in soybeans, corn, milk, eggs and other foods for the first time this year. “Also, glyphosate levels, if present in genetically engineered corn and soybeans, are likely to be reduced by the processing done to those foods,” FDA press officer Lauren Sucher said.

MON stock is up 1.07% Monday.
