A new study suggests that Alzheimer’s disease could be caused as a byproduct of another health problem.

Alzheimer's Disease

The research reveals that the illness could arise as a result of the brain attempting to ward off infections. If this proves to be true, then Alzheimer’s disease could be quite different from how we know it today.

It was previously believed that the mental disability surged as a result of a protein that built up plaque in the brain, causing patients to suffer memory loss.

The new study used data from examining worms and lab rats and how their brains react to infecting cells.

The research was published in the Science Translational Medicine journal.
