Spotify (Finally) Launches in Japan

Spotify has finally launched in Japan, but many still won’t have access to it yet.

Spotify, JapanThe launch of Spotify in Japan is currently available on an invite-only basis. Those that do get in invitation to the music streaming service will be able to use it on smartphones, tablets, desktop computers and Sony Corp (ADR)’s (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation video game consoles that have access to PlayStation Music.

Spotify in Japan will allow users to listen to both domestic and international music. The Japanese version of the app will include modes designed for those that use the service while playing video games and exercising.

Spotify’s team in Japan will also create playlists tailored to specific music genres in the country. This includes Tokyo Super Hits and Best of J-Rock playlists.

A new feature for Spotify that is debuting with its release in Japan is support for lyrics on mobile devices. This feature is available in other parts of the world, but is currently limited to desktop computers.

There are two different version of Spotify that are available in Japan. The first is a free service that is supported by advertisements. The second is a premium service that requires a subscription. The premium service costs 980 yen a month, which is about $9.00.

Those living in Japan that want to try out Spotify can head over to the company’s website. There they can fill out a requests for an invite to the service. There are plans to bring the service to the rest of Japan in the near future.
