Uber is now offering rides with its first self-driving cars to customers in Pittsburgh.

Uber, Self-DrivingUber customers that request a ride while in certain parts of the city could be greeted by one of the company’s self-driving cars. Passengers may be hesitant of the idea at first, but a safety driver will also be present. These drivers will handle situations that the software can’t, including certain types of weather.

The new effort by Uber will help it test out its self-driving technology. The company believes that self-driving cars could be its future and that it will also help cut down on congestion in cities. It also says that the technology could help save customers time.

“This pilot is a big step forward,” Uber said in statement. “Real-world testing is critical to the success of this technology. And creating a viable alternative to individual car ownership is important to the future of cities.”

Uber also argues that its self-driving cars won’t necessarily put people out of work. The company claims that its cars would run 24 hours a day and that this means they would need more maintenance than a normal vehicle.

Uber recently acquired Otto to help further its work on self-driving cars. It’s also teamed up with Volvo on the effort and is interested in working with other car automobile manufacturers.

Part of Uber’s agreement with Volvo concerns its new self-driving cars. The company is using XC90 SUVs bought from the company for its tests in Pittsburgh. The two also signed a $300-million deal that has them working together to develop dynamic mapping, object identification and other features for self-driving technology.
