The Trump Taj Mahal has suffered loses over the years and owner Carl Icahn has decided to close the facility down. Icahn has been involved in negotiations with union employees that want more benefits. He claims that the casino would have lost more than $100 million in the next year.

The decision to close the Trump Taj Mahal means that some 3,000 employees are out of work. 1,000 of these employees were fighting for additional benefits and had rejected Icahn’s last offer, which included medical benefits. The average pay at the casino was $12 an hour, reports USA Today.

“Today is a sad day for Atlantic City. Despite our best efforts, which included losing almost $350 million over just a few short years, we were unable to save the Taj Mahal,” Icahn told Forbes. “Like many of the employees at the Taj Mahal, I wish things had turned out differently.”

The Trump Taj Mahal was opened in 1990 by current presidential candidate Donald Trump. The casino resort has suffered from multiple bankruptcies over the years. Over this time, Trump lost control of the facility and it came to be owned by Icahn.

Due to the closing of the Trump Taj Mahal, all bookings at it after Oct. 9 have been cancelled. Customers are being refunded and room deposits are being returned. Those playing at the casino had until 8:00 a.m. this morning to turn in their chips and vouchers. However, now they can turn them in at the Casino Cage in Atlantic City.
