Hawaiian Holdings Takes Flight as Oil Continues Descent

Real America IndexHawaii’s Hawaiian Holdings (NASDAQ:HA) is up almost 3% today on news that crude oil prices continue to dip.  With airline profits tied to fuel costs, the slightest drop in oil often translates to good news for the sector, and today is no exception.

Hawaiian Holdings is the best-performing stock on the InvestorPlace.com Real America Index today. Other top performers include:

Nevada’s Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ: WYNN) is up 2.5% today as legendary Vegas icon Stephen A. Wynn announced that his “next goal in life [is] to build a hotel in Singapore.”  With two relatively new casino-resorts outpacing Strip hotel gaming revenues this year, investors seem willing to bet even more on Mr. Wynn.

Idaho’s Micron Technogloy (NASDAQ:MU) is up 2.17%, but not on any particular news.  The company does report earnings this week, and the consensus ranges from 3 cent profit to 26 cents.  With such a broad range, Micron stock is likely attracting speculators betting on the high side.

As for the worst performers in the Real America Index today, they are:

New York’s Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE:GS) is off -0.61%, mostly likely due to recent technical weakness and on news that a European regulatory agency fined the company $40,000 for “disorderly” trading — as if $40,000 means anything to Goldman.

California’s  Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) slipped -1.52% today, as the stock fell beneath its 200-day moving average, a major technical level of support. Apple stock may also still be absorbing the loss of its SVP of retail, Ron Johnson, to J.C. Penney.

Wyoming’s Double Eagle Petroleum (NASDAQ:DBLE) is the biggest loser, off -2.19%.  As a low-float microcap (only 11 million shares out) with relatively thin trading, the stock has a tendency to move on little news and, as with airlines, a small change in the price of oil can push Double Eagle out of its nest.

Looking at the broad perspective, the Real America Index is up a fraction of a percent, keeping pace with the other three major indexes.
