CenturyLink Joins Gigabit Internet Game

optical_fiber_630_flickrGoogle‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) super-high speed Internet service is getting some competition.

On Wednesday, CenturyLink (NYSE:CTL) announced that it will roll out “Lightspeed Broadband, a gigabit-speed Internet connection service, to 48,000 homes in Omaha, Nebraska. In order to deliver the service, the company will upgrade its connections in the city to fiber optic lines and will hire about 50 new workers in the area, PC Magazine noted.

Gigabit Internet connections offer data transmission speeds about 1,000 times faster than traditional cable and satellite broadband service. That means that consumers can download data-heavy digital content — like high-definition feature length movies — in just minutes, instead of hours.

The new service will reach 9,800 customers in Omaha beginning next week. All customers in Omaha should have access to the gigabit service by the fall.

Last month, Google announced that Provo, Utah, would become the third U.S. city after Austin, Texas, and Kansas City, Missouri, to receive its Google Fiber gigabit service.

Shares of CenturyLink fell more than 1% in Thursday morning trading.
