Amazon to Team Up With Postal Service for Sunday Delivery

amazon stock amznBeginning this month, Amazon (AMZN) shoppers in two of the nation’s largest cities will be able to have their orders show up on a day usually off limits for deliveries.

The Internet retailing giant is teaming up with the United States Postal Service (USPS) to deliver packages to consumers on Sunday in New York and Los Angeles. The program is meant to lure more shoppers away from traditional brick-and-mortar retailers by eliminating the normal shipping delay for products ordered on a Friday, the Wall Street Journal notes.

Under the deal, customer orders will be sent to post offices on Saturday or early Sunday from Amazon distribution centers. The USPS will then deliver the packages on Sunday. Customers in cities where the service is available will not be charged extra for Sunday deliveries.

AMZN indicated that Sunday service in New York and Los Angeles will kick off on Nov. 17. Next year, the company plans to add Sunday deliveries to a number of other major markets, including Houston, New Orleans, Phoenix and Dallas.

The USPS has long performed limited Sunday deliveries during the holiday season for its own packages, but the deal with AMZN marks the first significant expansion of the service to a commercial partner.

Shares of AMZN fell slightly in Monday pre-market trading.
