PS4 Stomps Xbox One in January Sales

Playstation 4Sony (SNE) says that sales of its new PlayStation 4 (PS4) video gaming console bested Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox One last month.

A Sony spokesperson noted that the PS4 was the top-selling next-generation gaming console in January. In fact, Sony indicated that PS4 sales in January were “nearly doubling the next-gen competitor.” Microsoft has not released Xbox One sales figures for last month, VentureBeat notes.

Sony’s comments are in line with data from industry research firm NDP Group. An NDP analyst said that the PS4 generated more sales than the Xbox One in January. In another telltale sign, the PS4 version of many popular video game titles sold more copies than the Xbox version last month.

Both the PS4 and the Xbox One launched in November.

Solid PS4 sales are a bit of good news for Sony, which recently announced plans to separate its money-losing TV business and sell its PC business altogether.

SNE stock slipped more than 1% in Friday morning trading, while MSFT stock fell slightly. SNE stock has climbed about 20% over the past year.
