tsla-tesla-self-driving-self-driving-car-driverless-carMusk said that Tesla is working on its own version of a self-driving car. He thinks that car manufacturers will be ready to release the vehicles in the next few year, but that it will take several more for regulations to catch up to the technology, reports The Wall Street Journal.

“The overall system and software will be programmed by Tesla, but we will certainly use sensors and subcomponents from many companies,” Musk told Raw Story.”I think in the long term, all Tesla cars will have auto-pilot capability.”

Musk claims that self-driving cars will be “a factor of 10 safer than a person” when it comes to driving. He said that the technology that allows a machine to quickly asses objects around it is the biggest problem at the moment. The issue is part of a problem for with how a car should react when its can’t clearly see an object near it, WSJ notes.

TSLA shares were up slightly as of Thursday afternoon.
