Nigeria and Senegal have both been declared free of Ebola.

free-of-ebola-nigeria-senegalThe World Health Organization (WHO) declared Senegal free of Ebola on Friday and did the same with Nigeria today. Nigeria hasn’t seen an Ebola infection for 42 days now, which is twice the incubation time of the virus, reports The New York Times.

While both Senegal and Nigeria are free of Ebola, this doesn’t mean the virus couldn’t show up in the countries again. This is due to the location of the countries in Africa. It’s also possible that Ebola patients will go to the countries seeking aid, NYT notes.

“Nigeria was not really prepared for the outbreak, but the swift response from the federal government, state governments (and) international organizations … was essential,” Samuel Matoka, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Ebola operations manager in Nigeria, told Reuters.

Ebola was brought to the United States by the late Thomas Eric Duncan. Since then, more possible cases of Ebola have occurred and President Barack Obama has appointed Ron Klain as the “Ebola Czar. The President isn’t currently considering a travel ban on countries that aren’t free of Ebola.
