The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is giving companies until 2018 to remove trans fats from their foods.
The FDA started its plan to remove trans fats from foods in 2013. It estimates that cutting the artificial ingredient from the American diet could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths ever year. The act will cost $6 billion to start, but could save $140 billion in health care cost over the next 20 years, reports The New York Times.
The food industry is thankful that its been given three years to remove trans fats from foods. However, it also said that it’s going to argue to keep minute amounts in certain foods. Meats and other food items that have trans fats naturally will still have them, NYT notes.
Here is a list from Mother Jones
of some foods that still contain trans fats:
- Frozen Pizza
- Margarine
