Lucara Diamond has unearthed the second largest diamond ever in the world.
The South African mining company’s shares were booming — more than 30% — after it announced the discovery of an incredible stone of 1,111 carats.
“The significance of the recovery of a gem quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century and the continued recovery of high quality stones…cannot be overstated,” said Lucara Diamond CEO William Lamb in a statement.
The diamond was found Monday and the company has yet to determine when or how to sell it into the market. Lamb said it’s impossible to put a price tag on it at this point.
“It’s early days. We need to see how best to get the maximum value of the stone,” he said, adding that he’s been getting emails from potential buyers.
In the past, Lucara dug up two white diamonds, estimated at 813 carats and 374 carats, at the same mine.
