Independence Day, also called the 4th of July, is a national holiday that’s been around since the Revolutionary War.

According to History.com, Independence Day wasn’t recognized as a federal holiday in the U.S. until 1941. The vote for independence from Great Britain was made on July 2nd and Thomas Jefferson, who drafted the Declaration of Independence, believed that day would be celebrated by future generations.
