InvestorPlace has collected a list of a few things to know about the new Gorilla Glass 5 product and they are as follows:

  • The new smartphone glass survived drops from 1.6 meters, 5.2 feet, onto rough surfaces 80% of the time, which is four times better than rival smartphone glass covers.
  • This update means that users aren’t likely to break the glass even when taking selfies with their smartphones.
  • Despite being tougher than previous versions, Gorilla Glass 5 continues to maintain the same level of optical clarity and touch sensitivity as past iterations.
  • Corning said the new product will start showing up in devices later this year, which could mean that it’ll be used in Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) upcoming iPhone 7 that is expected to release this Fall.

“With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.” Corning vice president and general manager John Bayne said in a statement.
