Frank Vincent’s death was confirmed by his family on Wednesday. He passed away while in New Jersey. A cause of death hasn’t been announced, but the actor had recently suffered a heart attack. He was in a local hospital on Wednesday getting heart surgery.

Here are a few things to remember about Frank Vincent.

  • He was known for playing mobsters due to his tough appearance.
  • This includes playing Billy Batts in Goodfellas.
  • He also played Phil Leotardo on The Sopranos.
  • Frank Vincent actually auditioned for a role on The Sopranos at its start, but was turned down.
  • The reason he wasn’t allowed to join the HBO series at its start was because of the popularity of the Billy Batts character.
  • The creators of the show felt that having him play a mobster again right after that role would be too close of an association to the Goodfellas character.
  • Vincent’s first movie role was in 1976’s The Death Collector.
  • Prior to this, he was the drummer in a band with fellow actor Joe Pesci.
  • The actor was born in North Adams, Mass., but grew up in Jersey City.
  • Vincent also took part in voice acting and appeared in Grand Theft Auto as Don Salvatore Leone.
