Star Wars: Episode IX will now be directed by J.J. Abrams.
The film was originally slated to have Colin Trevorrow at the helm, but the director stepped down from the role due to him reportedly clashing with the head of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, the studio behind the film. Many were saying that Trevorrow was hard to work with.
Star Wars fans are likely to rejoice over the fact that J.J. Abrams will direct another movie in the franchise as his 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens proved to be a return to form for the movie series following the underwhelming second trilogy of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The official Star Wars website issued the following statement: “J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of
Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.”
Kennedy expressed her joy over having Abrams back, saying he is everything the company could hope for. Star Wars: Episode IX will mark the end of the third trilogy in the film franchise. However, many fans were hoping to have a female director for the film, but perhaps that will still happen in the future for Star Wars.
The movie won’t be out until 2019.
