Alphabet Inc’s (NASDAQ:GOOG,GOOGL) Sidewalk Labs is planning to create a smart city in Toronto.

Sidewalk Labs says that it will be developing a neighborhood in Waterfront Toronto that will serve as a model for future smart cities. The neighborhood that it will develop will be called Quayside.

According to the Alphabet company, the effort to develop Quayside also has a few other goals. The first is to create a diverse community that will improve the quality of life of its residents. The second is to make the area desirable to companies, startups and local groups. Finally, its wants to area to act as a hub for the urban development industry.

Sidewalk Labs says that the Quayside neighborhood will be located at Parliament Slip. This will have it sitting southeast of  Downtown Toronto. The Alphabet company says that it chose to develop its new smart city in Toronto after evaluating several possible locations. Waterfront Toronto was also seeking a company to help it develop the area.

Sidewalk Labs hopes that it will be able to expand the development of Quayside to the rest of the Waterfront Toronto area. If it can complete this goal, it will take 800 acres of underdeveloped land and turn it into a center for new urban development.

Alphabet says that it will be putting its own skin in the game to develop the Waterfront Toronto area. The company plans to move Google’s Canadian headquarters into the Eastern Waterfront.
