If Moms Got Paychecks …

Motherhood. It’s been dubbed by many as the world’s toughest job. As a mom of two, I echo that assertion. Hours? Long. Job duties? Even longer. “Employers?” Demanding. Paycheck? What paycheck?

Don’t get me wrong. Motherhood bustles with many rewards too precious for price tags. But sometimes, it’s nice to know just how much our daily efforts would amount to in paycheck form.

Salary.com, a division of Kenexa (NYSE:KNXA), recently released its yearly average for what stay-at-home and work-outside-the-home mothers would make if they were paid an annual salary for their motherly duties.

Drum roll, please …

Stay-at-Home Mom: $112,962

Working Mom: $66,979 (However, working moms’ at-home mothering salary should be combined with her actual work salary to determine her fictional yearly compensation.)

How were these numbers selected? Salary.com surveyed more than 8,000 moms to determine their job duties and hours. The online compensation site concluded that on average, a stay-at-home mom manages a 95-hour work week. A working mom puts in about 58 hours of work at home per week, in addition to the time she spends at her paying job.

The site also took overtime into consideration and used average salary information from comparable jobs (janitor, psychologist, teacher, van driver, facilities manager, etc.).

Since each mom’s workload is unique, the site also includes the “Mom Salary Wizard” that allows moms to calculate their salary. You can read the complete report with insights from experts at Salary.com.
