Apple Inc. (AAPL) Rumors – A Dockable Touch-Screen iMac?

Here is your daily Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) stock news and rumors for August 24, 2010. More Apple patent intrigue today as a new filing reveals an iMac that doubles as a traditional desktop and a touch-screen computer. In other news, Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) updates its Google Mobile App and one author claims e-books sell a whole lot better via the Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Kindle than through the AAPL iBookstore.

Apple Patent Reveals Touch-screen iMac With Adjustable Stand: The exciting Apple Inc. patents just keep rolling in. This time a patent filing published by the World Intellectual Property Organization reveals what looks to be a new iMac that blends the best of Apple’s home computers and their new tablet, the iPad. The new patent, called, “Transitioning Between Modes of Input” shows a screen, very similar in form to the new 27-inch LED Cinema Display Mac screens, on an adjustable stand. Moving the screen triggers a change between “input modes and corresponding user interfaces.” The change also alters on-screen items by “enlarging/reducing, obscuring/unobscuring, moving, etc.” any open applications or icons. When the screen is upright, the screen outputs in high resolution and allows traditional mouse and keyboard control. When it’s shifted into a horizontal position, the screen shifts into a low resolution, touch-screen mode.

New Google Mobile App Update Adds Android Functionality: Google updated its Google Mobile App for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. This is a free application that lets users access their Gmail accounts, Google Calendars, Documents and other features. The update brings the application more in line with functionality on Google’s own platforms, like the Andoird operating system. The big improvement is that the app now supports push notifications for new emails on a Gmail account and Google Calendar updates. This is a boon for Gmail users who didn’t get to take advantage of iOS’ Push Notification Service technology. The update also improves search-as-you-type functionality, so the app will provide results for commonly searched info like weather reports and stock quotes as they’re typed out.

Author Claims Kindle e-books Outsell iBooks by 60:1 Ratio: J.A. Koranth, the author behind dozens of eBooks like Shot of Tequila and Truck Stop, claims that, while Apple Inc.’s iPad might be crushing the Amazon Kindle in sales, e-books are a whole lot healthier on devoted eReaders. Koranth claims that he averages around 200 e-book sales each day, compared to 100 e-books sold through APPL’s iBookstore. While one author’s success on one specific platform over another is hardly evidence of a trend, it’s telling that an independent author like Koranth can see such a difference in sales on a device with a fraction of the user base that platforms that support the iBookstore do. There are only around 4 million Kindles in consumer hands, compared to the millions of iPads, iPhone 4s, iPod Touches and computers that APPL manufactures. Steve Jobs claimed at the beginning of June that 22% of all e-books sold are sold through the iBookstore. It will be interesting to see where publishers put their support in the coming months.
