Uber is currently illegal in South Carolina.
According to WLTX 19, Uber was ordered to stop its activities in the state by the Public Service Commission until it obtained the necessary certification. The certification the company needs in the state is one of public convenience and necessity. This certification is required of all motor vehicle carriers.
Uber has been available in four cities in South Carolina since July of 2014. However, without the certification, it wasn’t legal for it to start its business. The company is currently in the process of applying for the certification, reports WLTX 19.
“I feel like in the current economic climate, people should take every opportunity they can to make a buck,” Derek Watson, who lives in an area in South Carolina where Uber was available, told WYFF Greenville. “Cab companies in town can’t handle demand on high-demand nights, so I feel like it’s a positive thing.”
