A Colorado citizen has died of plague.
The Pueblo County resident is the second person from Colorado to die of the disease in 2015. This is the first time a Pueblo County resident has gotten plague since 2004.
The health department says the person likely got infected with plague from fleas on a dead rodent or other animal. The disease afflicts about seven people in the US every year.
Called Yersinia pestis
, plague is transmitted from rodent to rodent by infected fleas. Symptoms show within 2 to 6 days, causing fever, chills and death if left untreated immediately.
