ABC Family is changing its name to Freeform.
The network — founded as the Family Channel — includes shows such as Pretty Little Liars that deal with provocative issues such as teen pregnancy that may not be suitable for the entire family.
Freeform is designed for the network’s target audience of 14- to 34-year-olds, a group known as the “becomers” who are looking for their own identities.
“There was enough difference in perception between people who already like us and people who don’t know us,” says ABC Family president Tom Ascheim, so, “the name change will harmonize who our audience is, what our label means and what we stand for.”
