Pope Francis is calling for a study that would examine women’s potential as deacons.
The study would be conducted by a commission — appointed by the Pope — that would determine if women can successfully serve as deacons of the Roman Catholic Church.
Traditionally, the clergy has consisted entirely of men. However, there is no reason to believe that women wouldn’t perform their duties as deacons with the same success as men.
The idea has its critics, consisting of those steeped in tradition who believe the move would break the Catholic Church’s doctrine.
Pope Francis made this announcement in front of 900 sisters during a question-and-answer session.
