Stores Told to Act Soon: European resellers say Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has asked them to add table space at their iPad displays over the next several weeks, MacRumors reports. The request supports rumors that the company will unveil a new, smaller-screen iPad in early September. One report indicates that Apple has given its retailers a deadline of Sept. 12 to increase the iPad display space. That’s also the date a wide number of sources are citing for the unveiling of the next-generation iPhone and possibly an iPad Mini at a special event. Retailers have been permitted to increase iPad display space even if it means reducing space for iPod,  iMac and Mac Pro displays. Some sources say the display space changes were first requested three months ago, but are now being pushed out to additional retailers. Apple sold 17 million iPads during the last quarter.

iPhone Spurs Wireless Growth: The addition of the iPhone 4S has drawn millions of new subscribers to China Telecom (NYSE:CHA), AppleInsider says. The Chinese wireless provider said it added 8.35 million new customers during the second quarter and attributed most of the gain to the iPhone. The company started offering the iPhone 4S on its network in March. Previously, rival China Unicom (NYSE:CHU) had exclusive rights to the iPhone in China. China Telecom said subsidizing the iPhone would dampen earnings in the short term, but attract a large number of subscribers, boosting long-term growth.

Foxconn Making Improvements: A report from the Fair Labor Association (FLA) indicated that Apple’s Taiwanese manufacturing partner, Foxconn, has taken significant steps to improve worker safety at its facilities, Bloomberg noted. The report identified 284 infractions that the company had corrected at three of its factories since the association first audited it in February. Another 254 infractions are scheduled to be corrected by mid-2013. The FLA noted that Foxconn had set “ambitious” targets to boost worker conditions and was moving forward with the corrections faster than anticipated. The company permitted FLA representative unrestricted access to its Guanlan, Longhua and Chengdu, China, facilities.
