AOL Relaunches

Game portal to launch with 5,000 available titles

AOL (NYSE:AOL) is relaunching in hopes of turning it into the preeminent web-based games portal. AOL is coming out with more than 5,000 free games at startup, as well as games for the growing mobile market.

The relaunch, reported by TheNextWeb, was announced at GDC Online, the Game Developers Conference being held in Austin, Texas. AOL bought the site from former Atari parent Infogrames, now named Atari S.A.

Games for the new platform are designed with mobile and cross-compatibility in mind. AOL has partnered with developers including Big Fish Games and GameHouse for the launch, with hopes of expanding its gaming library as AOL expands its partnerships.

AOL isn’t alone in the market, however. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is also expanding into browser-based free gaming. MSFT recently announced that it would bring several classic video games online, as well as other free games.
