A recent study shows that last year, the number of tablets owned by adults more than doubled — so it’s no wonder that Toys ‘R’ Us is trying to make the booming gadgets popular for kids as well.

The world’s largest toy store just announced plans to sell content for its new Tabeo children’s tablet with a streaming and downloading video service.

Users will be able to stream content on PCs, Macs and Adobe Flash-enabled devices immediately following the debut, and on Blu-ray players, TVs and tablets soon after.

The new service will also contain parental controls, allowing screen time to be managed. It also comes just as competitors are adding similar plans for their own tablet offerings.

Barnes & Noble (NYSE:BKS) recently added video to its Nook tablet, for example, while Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has expanded its Prime offerings for the Kindle.

Toys ‘R’ Us is currently being sued for its Tabeo product, though — a possible obstacle to its holiday-season debut.

But if that is swept under the rug, the new streaming video could give this niche tablet a better shot during the seasonal tablet wars. Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad and Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Nexus 7 are also popular products.

Toys ‘R’ Us has been gearing up for the holiday season for some time now, with plans to nix layaway fees and to hire more than 45,000 new workers.
