John McAfee, founder of the Intel-owned (NASDAQ:INTC) McAfee AntiVirus, is wanted for questioning in Belize in connection with the killing of a neighbor. Gregory Viant Faull was found shot dead at his home Sunday morning. He was last seen alive on Saturday night.
A spokesman for the Belize Ministry of National Security stressed that McAfee is a “person of interest,” reports the Associated Press. The spokesman went on to say the investigation is in its early stages and that saying anyone, including McAfee, is a suspect is premature.
Prior to Faull’s killing, McAfee has had trouble with the authorities in Belize. In April, police looking for illegal guns and drugs raided his home. Guns were found, but no charges were filed, and McAfee was released after a few hours detention. Claiming he was being harassed by police, he later disconnected his phone.
McAfee sold his stake in the antivirus firm decades ago. He claimed, in an interview with The New York Times in 2009, to have lost most of his fortune in the 2008 financial crisis. He subsequently move to Belize to take advantage of the country’s lower tax rates.
