If you were hoping to buy a Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) smartphone in the future, you are out of luck.

Speaking at the Dell World conference on Wednesday, Jeff Clarke, Dell’s vice president of global operations, said that the computer maker was withdrawing from the global smartphone market completely, BGR noted.

Dell had previous produced a line of smartphones running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system, but opted end distribution of the phones in the U.S. last year.

Clarke told conference attendees that the company would not make another attempt to enter the smartphone market, but that it would explore service and content solutions for smartphones. Dell will also focus on making tablets and touch-screen computers running Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 8 operating system.

Dell’s Windows 8 tablets would compete with Microsoft’s own Surface tablets, which are expected to sell about 500,000 units during the holiday quarter. That is considerably less than the 3 million units analysts had previously predicted.

Clarke noted that Google and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) sell Android devices at a loss, recouping their investment with later media content and advertising sales.

Shares of Dell slipped fractionally in Friday morning trading.
