A new list by Forbes shows the best places to retire in 2013.

Forbes assembled the list — which is not ranked — by comparing more than 400 cities and regions. Each was ranked by factors such as crime, cost of living and outdoor opportunities. In all, the list has 25 locations in 16 states.

Here’s a sample:

  • Charlotte, N.C. — Great weather and reasonable cost of living
  • Prescott, Ariz. — Low taxes and crime
  • Ames, Iowa — Reasonable cost of living and low home prices
  • Jacksonville, Fla. — High volunteer opportunities, good air quality
  • Baton Rouge, La. — Low taxes and a housing
  • Fargo, N.D. — Great air quality, low crime
  • Lexington, Ky. — Moderate Weather, good services for the aging
  • Bangor, Maine — Many doctors and good air quality
  • Medford, Ore. — Many doctors, good air quality
  • College Station, Texas — College atmosphere, no state income tax
