Starbucks (SBUX) is expecting record purchases and activations of Starbucks gift cards on Dec. 19.

starbucks-gift-cardsStarbucks cites the winter holidays as the reason behind its anticipation for high gift card sales. According to Starbucks, one in every 10 Americans received a Starbucks gift card last year and the company expects to see record sales of gift cards again this year.

This is likely to happen due to the estimate that eight out of 10 Americans are expected to purchase a gift card this year and the fact that Starbucks gift cards have been rated as the fourth-most-wanted gift card in the United States.

Starbucks gift cards are available at 80,000 locations in North America. The gift cards were introduced 12 years ago and are entering their 13th year of availability. Since the inception of Starbucks gift cards, 450 million cards have been sold. The total amount of money that has been loaded onto these cards is $16 billion.

The company also offers several different ways to purchase Starbucks gift cards. Those who don’t want to head into a store can order digital gift cards through the coffee chain’s website, the Starbucks app on mobile devices using Apple’s (AAPL) iOS, Facebook (FB) and Twitter (TWTR).

Holders of Starbucks gift cards may soon be able to order soda at Starbucks locations due to the company filing a trademark for a soda machine called “Fizzio.”
