Blackberry (BBRY), announced on Monday, that BlackBerry Messenger will be coming to Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Phone and Nokia (NOK) X phones.

blackberry-bbry-stock-blackberry-messenger-windows-nokia-xBlackBerry expects to bring BlackBerry Messenger to Windows Phone later this year and to Nokia X devices when they launch. BlackBerry Messenger is already available on devices running Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system, Apple’s (AAPL) iOS and of course, BlackBerry phones. The messaging service was launched in 2005, reports The Wall Street Journal.

BlackBerry didn’t have a good run last year and may be hoping that the expansion of BlackBerry Messenger to Windows Phone and Nokia X phones will help it out, but this might not be the case.

“Windows Phone – compared with iOS and Android – has a low install base, so the launch of BBM isn’t going to massively change their position. It is not a silver bullet,” Jack Kent, a mobile analyst at IHS, told CNBC.

BBRY shares were up 6% as of Monday morning.
