Monopoly house rules are on their way to becoming official in a special edition of the game that Hasbro (HAS) will release this fall.
The toy company is inviting fans to debate the pros and cons of 10 popular house rules on the game’s Facebook page through April 3. Hasbro will then choose five of those which will become official rules in the special edition as well as an addendum to the official rules in a Monopoly game guide next year.
Popular Monopoly house rules include the addition of more cash into Free Parking, giving $400 for landing exactly on “Go,” using extra houses and hotels if they run out. The current game limits the game to 32 houses and 12 hotels.
Monopoly also has strict rules regarding how much money is thrown out because the more money is given out, the longer the game usually takes. However, Elizabeth J. Magie might agree with adding Monopoly house rules.
Magie created The Landlord’s Game, a precursor to Monopoly. Her 1904 patent reads that “should any emergency arise which is not covered by the rules of the game, the players must settle the matter between themselves.”
HAS stock is down about 0.9% Tuesday.
