Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:

aapl-appleThin: Apple (AAPL) may soon be able to reduce the thickness of its phones with retina displays, AppleInsider notes. One source claims that the company has found a way to reduce the number of brightness enhancement films used in the iPhone 5s’ retina display from two to one. This will make the smartphones thinner, but will also make production of the phones more difficult. To help with this, Apple has allegedly brought in OMRON and Radiant to act as suppliers of backlight enhancement films for the iPhone 6.

Release: Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for KGI Securities, predicts that Apple will release the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 in September. The iPad Air 2 isn’t expected to change much in appearance, but it may feature a 2048×1536 resolution, TouchID or fingerprint recognition technology and changes to the buttons. The device is also expected to get a boost in power from an A8 processor. The iPad Mini 3 is rumored to have an A8 processor, 2048×1536 resolution, 8MP camera, 7.9-inch screen and TouchID fingerprint scanning. It may also be running iOS 8, reports Ecumenical News.

Maps: Apple may be looking to overhaul its Maps services. The company recently posted job openings for two senior software engineers that would work for its Maps API team, AppleInsider notes. The listings for the jobs state that Apple is looking for “engineers that live and (breathe) distributed systems and services.” The listings also state that the company is looking for applicants with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or equivalent industry experience.
