Shredded cheeses, breakfast sandwiches, barbecue sauces and other products from these companies contain cellulose from wood pulp, according to NPR. This isn’t exactly news but it continues to be a controversial subject even though the food additive is actually good for you.

It’s frightening to think that some of the food we eat contains wood pulp which is also used to make paper. However, the additive that these products use is cellulose which simply refers to a molecule that can be extracted from any plant including onions.

Cellulose is used to improve the texture of certain food products but it also has a more important function. The additive contains fiber which holds no nutritional value but the material is essential to our diet and overall health as it helps remove waste from our bodies.

MCD stock is down about 0.45% Thursday afternoon.
