A team from Edmunds.com has set a new record for driving across the united States in one of Tesla Motors’ (TSLA) Model S cars.

tesla-cross-country-tsla-stockThe Edmunds team was able to drive the Tesla Model S from Redondo Beach, Calif., to New York, N.Y. The team had to stop at 23 different Supercharging stations before its trip was complete. The trip across the country took a little over 67 hours. This beats out the old record of 76 hours, reports USA Today.

No aid was given to the Edmunds team and it only relied on charging stations to make it across the country. The team only filled the battery up as much as they needed to in order to make it to the next charging station. They ate while the car charged and took turns sleeping on the way. The team also avoided aggressive driving that could quickly drain the battery, USA Today notes.

The previous record for travelling cross country in a Tesla vehicle was actually set by the car manufacturer itself. The car company’s trek across the United States was hampered by a blizzard that slowed its times and affected battery life, reports Torque News.
