General Motors (GM) is planning to offer hands-free driving in specific cars by 2016.

gm-hands-free-driving-general-motorsGM plans to offer hands-free driving in certain Cadillac models via a feature called “SuperCruise.” SuperCruise is a feature that would allow drivers to cruise down the road hands free while remaining in a certain lane. The feature would use Wi-Fi to communicate with other cars with similar features, reports Cnet.

GM’s SuperCruise system is designed to allow drivers to take a break during their drives. This includes being able to remove feet from the vehicles’ pedals. However, the system will still require drivers to pay attention to what is happening around them in case they need to take over control from the car, Cnet notes.

“It’s critical that it works flawlessly every single time,” Mary Barra, CEO of GM, told Bloomberg. “When you look at what has got to come together to make this happen — not just for straight driving on a section of highway, but for every city situation you can imagine — there’s quite a bit of technology that has to come together to make this work.”
