Microsoft (MSFT) Is Quietly Making Some Smart Moves

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) doesn’t get much attention in the tablet market. Instead, it is Apple Inc. (AAPL) and others that always seem to come out on top.

But this current reality isn’t stopping Satya Nadella and the rest of the MSFT team from forging ahead, releasing new tablets such as the Surface Pro 3, and forming relationships with other companies.

For a limited time, from now until Oct. 6, if you purchase a new Surface Pro 3 through the official Microsoft Store you will receive a free one year subscription to New York Times Crossword. This may not seem like a big deal, but any little bit helps when a company is trying to fight back market share.

One of the coolest things about this is that “old school” crossword players can use their Surface Tablet pen to play just the way they always have. Technology may be changing the world, but it is not completely squashing the way people have done things in the past.

Reimagine Your City

A recent Microsoft in Government blog post shares MSFT’s vision of a “smart city,” with Laura Ipsen, corporate vice president, worldwide public sector,  penning her thoughts.

The company’s CityNext initiative is helping cities in China change the way they think about the future. Ipsen writes:

“By transforming their existing infrastructure and investments, connecting and streamlining operations across many city functions, and engaging citizens and businesses in solving their toughest challenges, Microsoft CityNext is accelerating innovation and opportunities for cities globally.”

Microsoft does not always get the attention it deserves from outsiders, perhaps because its tablet and smartphone devices have not been nearly as competitive as others, such as those from Apple, Samsung (SSNLF), and other big-name vendors.

These stories show that MSFT is not sitting dormant, but continuing to do the right thing for individual consumers and large groups of people throughout the world.

As of this writing, Chris Bibey did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
