Twitter (TWTR) Digits is the company’s effort to replace typical passwords with a new system.

Twitter Digit is a system that has people replacing their passwords with their phone numbers. The system could be used for apps connected to Twitter, but it can also be used for other apps, reports Engadget.

Twitter Digits removes usernames and passwords from the situation. Instead, a phone number is used and a passcode is sent to users via a text message. App developers will be able to incorporate Digits into apps running on Apple’s (AAPL) iOS, Google’s (GOOG) Android and web browsers, Engadget notes.

“There are 940 million phones – smartphones – that are going to be sold this year in emerging markets. That’s three times the market for your apps,” Michael Ducker, Product Manager of Twitter Digits, told TechCrunch.

TWTR shares were up 1% as of Thursday afternoon.
