MSFT, AAPL: Microsoft Rolls Out Free Office Apps for iPhone, Android

Microsoft (MSFT) is now making Office apps for portable devices free to everyone.

Office AppsThe tech giant announced in a blog post Thursday that Google (GOOG) Android users and Apple (AAPL) users can now download Office apps without a subscription.

Microsoft released Office apps for iPad earlier this year but users needed a subscription to edit or create documents. You can now use the program for free but you’ll still need a subscription to access the advanced features of the programs.

The company also announced new apps for Word, Excel and PowerPoint on the iPhone, as well as updates for the same Office apps on iPad.

MSFT stock is up about 1.4% Thursday afternoon. AAPL stock is up 0.03%.
