Sunedison Inc., TerraForm Power Inc. to Buy First Wind for $2.4B

SunEdison Inc. (SUNE) and TerraForm Power Inc. (TERP) will buy First Wind for $2.4 billion.

sunedison-inc-terraform-power-inc-sune-terpSunEdison CEO Ahmad Chatila said that the decision to buy First Wind was made so that it could “doubles our served available market.” The company now expects o install 2.3 gigawatts of capacity in 2015 compared to the expected 1.6 gigawatts to 1.8 gigawatts prior to news of the acquisition, reports Bloomberg.

The acquisition of First Wind by SunEdison and its holding company TerraForm Power will be made with a $1.9 billion payment upfront. The other $510 million of the deal is dependent on if the company completes its backlogged projects. The deal is expected to close in Q1 2015 and SunEdison won’t change its name after the acquisition, Bloomberg notes.

“We felt that having wind would help us double down on our strategy,” Chatila told The New York Times. “We feel that electrons are electrons — solar or wind really doesn’t matter for our customers. Our customers are demanding that we have a more comprehensive solution.”

SUNE stock was up 28% as of Tuesday afternoon and TERP stock was up 29%.
