Twitter (TWTR), announced on Tuesday, that it has acquired ZipDial.
Details regarding the acquisition of ZipDial by Twitter weren’t announced. The two have worked together in the past for elections and film releases. The startup also said that it hopes to bring the social media company’s service to everyone, even if they don’t have internet access, reports The New York Times.
ZipDial is an Indian startup that uses the “missed call” practice to help connect company’s to users without internet access. The missed call practice has people calling a company to hear about it ads and then hanging up. After this, the company will send data about ads back to the person, NYT
notes.
“Over the next several years, billions of people will come online for the first time in countries like Brazil, India and Indonesia. For many, their first online experience will be on a mobile device – but the cost of data may prevent them from experiencing the true power of the Internet,” Christian Oestlien, Vice President of Product at Twitter, said in a statement. “Twitter, in partnership with ZipDial, can make great content more accessible to everyone.”
TWTR shares were up slightly as of Tuesday afternoon.
