The new patent filed by Amazon is titled ““Providing Services Related to Item Delivery via 3D Manufacturing on Demand”. The idea behind the patent is that items could be ordered and created on the same truck by using 3D printers. This could save the company warehouse space as it wouldn’t have to store the item before it’s ordered, reports GeekWire.

The idea of using 3D printers to make items on demand isn’t just limited to Amazon delivery trucks. It’s also noted that a warehouse could use 3D printers and quickly drop the completed item off at an Amazon Locker location. This would allow a person to pick the item up shortly after ordering it, GeekWire notes.

Amazon isn’t against the idea of a unique delivery system. The company has been planning an unmanned drone delivery system, but it recently ran into trouble from new FAA rulings concerning drones.
