Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) has opened up a new office in Hong Kong.

twitter-hong-kong-china-twtrTwitter’s Hong Kong office is the first it has opened in China. The company’s social media service has been banned in the country since 2009. However, it still plans to use its new office to bring in ad revenue, reports Fortune.

Twitter allows companies to feature ads with it in the form of Promoted Tweets. These Tweets show up in users’ feeds and can appear similar to a normal Tweet. Some Chinese companies are hoping to use these ads to reach worldwide customers, Fortune notes.

“Opening our Hong Kong office now and hiring a sales team to work directly with advertisers across the Greater China market will contribute to our next phase of growth in Asia,” Shailesh Rao, vice president of Twitter’s Asia division, told TechCrunch.
