People living in Australia may soon have to pay a “Netflix tax”.
The Netflix tax isn’t specific to the video-streaming service. Instead, it would affect all “intangible” services that are offered in the country. This means that music downloads would also be affected. The tax would be set at 10%, reports Sydney Morning Herald.
The Netflix tax could also affect service that come from other countries but are sent to Australia. One company that would see its service hit by the tax is Uber, which provides taxi rides to people who order via a mobile app. The final decision on the tax is being left to Treasurer Joe Hockey, Sydney Morning Herald notes.
If the Netflix tax is passed, the company said it would be fine with adding it to its bills for subscribers.
