It also gives her a chance to weigh in on the companies ideas before they go public. The actual name of the role is “technical adviser to the CEO”, reports Recode.

Maria Renz is the first woman to have been named as Jeff Bezos’ shadow. Prior to being his shadow, she was the CEO of Diapers.com’s parent company Quidsi, which was acquired by Amazon in 2011. Her role as shadow will last for two years. Many who’ve held the role go on to lead initiatives at the company, Recode notes.

Maria Renz was the Director of Marketing Communications in 2001 and advised the company to offer free shipping instead of a TV ad campaign. This put her job at risk, but impressed Bezos and he offered her the job as head of the company’s health, beauty and grocery business, reports CNNMoney.
