A new Alzheimer’s drug made by Eli Lilly (LLY) may be able to help slow the disease down.

However, previous studies of the drug haven’t had positive results, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The new Alzheimer’s drug still has another study to complete to test how well it works. The study isn’t set to finish until 2016, but it is expected to give a better look into the medicine’s effects and includes 2,100 patients. If the drug works, it could become the first one marketed that is able to actually slow the disease, WSJ notes.

“”We should think about these drugs as slowing progression of an underlying disease,” Dr. Paul Aisen, the University of Southern California’s director of the Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute, told NBC News. “We see … in mild subjects roughly a one-third slowing of decline.”

LLY shares were up slightly as of Wednesday afternoon.
