5 Worst Sectors to Avoid This Week

On the Portfolio Grader database this week, the energy services, marine, construction and engineering, distributors and electrical equipment sectors are among the worst.

With 91% of its stocks (51 out of 56) rated “sell,” the energy services sector is struggling this week. With an overall grade of F, CARBO Ceramics (CRR), Tidewater (TDW) and Transocean (RIG) are weighing down the sector. CARBO Ceramics is the worst performer in this sector, with a 74.9% decline in the last 12 months.

The marine sector is dragging, with 75% of its stocks (6 out of 8) rated a “sell”. Out of the marine stocks, Seaspan Corporation (SSW), Kirby Corporation (KEX) and Golden Ocean Group Ltd (GOGL) are near the bottom with F’s.

The construction and engineering sector is trailing behind others this week, with 67% of its stocks (14 out of 21) rated a “sell”. With an overall grade of F, Empresas ICA SAB de CV Sponsored ADR (ICA), KBR, Inc. (KBR) and Jacobs Engineering Group (JEC) are weighing down the sector. Overall, Empresas ICA SAB de CV Sponsored ADR is the poorest performer in this sector. Its share price has dropped 48.8% in the last 12 months.

The distributors sector is lagging this week with 60% of its stocks (15 out of 25) rated a “sell”. With a score of F, NOW Inc (DNOW), Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc. (BECN) are weighing down the sector. WESCO International, Inc. (WCC) also has a low D.

The electrical equipment sector looks weak, with 59% of its stocks (16 out of 27) rated a “sell”. Out of the electrical equipment stocks, General Cable Corporation (BGC), GrafTech International Ltd (GTI) and Encore Wire Corporation (WIRE) are near the bottom with F’s. GrafTech International Ltd is the worst stock in its sector, with the company’s share price falling 60.4% in the last 12 months.
