The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) currently has $42 billion of unclaimed funds in the U.S. These cases are often caused by financial institutions or companies that have not contacted the owners of their accounts for a year or longer.

These unclaimed funds include savings and checking accounts, stocks, uncashed dividends, security deposits, IRS refunds and more. There are several websites such as MissingMoney.com and unclaimed.org that are endorsed by NAUPA.

You can do free searches on these sites, which show collective records from all state-held unclaimed property. The treasury website for the state you live in and other states you have lived in can also shed information on missing money.

IRS.gov is also a good website to check to see if the Internal Revenue Service failed to give you your return due to undeliverable mail. treasuryhunt.gov will help you search for any unclaimed savings bonds and payments.
